What is neurosurgery?

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty dedicated to treating diseases affecting the central and peripheral nervous system that may require surgery at some point during their progression. However, at our centre, we understand that the role of the neurosurgeon goes far beyond surgery itself.

Spinal Column Pathology

At IMAR Palma we are pioneers in biportal endoscopic surgery (BESS/UBE), a minimally invasive technique for treating disc herniations and stenosis with high precision.

Degenerative Pathology of the Spinal Column

Natural wear and tear due to age can affect discs, ligaments and joints, causing pain or loss of mobility.

The causes of spinal fractures can be varied. The first and most common are accidents or trauma. However, other factors also exist, such as osteoporosis (which causes bone weakness) or tumour-related causes.

Tumoral Spinal Column Pathology

Spinal tumours can present with a variety of symptoms, which may include persistent pain in the back or neck, pain radiating to the limbs, muscle weakness, loss of sensation, difficulty walking, changes in bladder or bowel control, and in advanced cases, spontaneous vertebral fractures.

Infectious Spinal Column Pathology

Spondylodiscitis or spinal infection refers to the presence of an infection in the intervertebral discs, vertebrae or surrounding tissues of the spinal column. This condition can be caused by various microorganisms, with bacteria being the most commonly involved infectious agent.

Peripheral Nerve Pathology

Peripheral nerves are a network of nerve fibres originating in the central nervous system that extend throughout the body. They control movement and sensation in different parts of the body. The most common diseases affecting the peripheral nerve include diabetic neuropathy, alcoholic neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, entrapment neuropathy, hereditary peripheral neuropathy and vitamin B12 deficiency neuropathy, among others.

What advantages does neurosurgery offer for each of these conditions?

Less Pain and Faster Recovery

Spinal endoscopy requires a smaller incision, resulting in less pain and a faster recovery than traditional spinal surgery.

Shorter Hospitalisation Time

Patients who undergo spinal endoscopy typically require less time in hospital and can return to their normal activities more quickly than those who undergo traditional spinal surgery.

Lower Risk of Complications

Spinal endoscopy reduces the risk of surgical complications compared to traditional spinal surgery.

Greater Precision and Control

Spinal endoscopy allows the surgeon greater precision and control when accessing the spinal column and visualising the pathology directly through a video camera and specific surgical instruments.

What is neurosurgery like at Imar Palma?

The procedure begins with the patient under general anaesthesia.

Through two minimal skin incisions of just a few millimetres, access is gained to the area to be operated on. Through one of them, a 4mm diameter high-definition endoscopic camera is inserted, and through the other, the specialised surgical instruments.

Thanks to the enlarged and sharp visualisation provided by the HD camera, the surgeon accesses the spinal canal without damaging the musculature or destroying vertebral surfaces, which preserves the stability of the spine.

Work is carried out directly on the affected area, either to remove a disc herniation or to free a compressed nerve.

The biportal technique offers great manoeuvrability, allowing the treatment of most spinal pathologies, from disc herniations to stenosis in different segments.

The image obtained is even more detailed than that provided by a surgical microscope, enabling more precise surgery.

Once decompression is complete and the correct condition of the nerve structures has been verified, the instruments are removed and the small incisions are closed.

In most cases, the patient can be discharged the same day or after just one night in hospital.

How painful is neurosurgery?

During the procedure, the patient feels no pain thanks to general anaesthesia. The minimally invasive nature of the technique, by preserving the muscles and bone structures, means that post-operative pain is significantly lower than in other spinal surgeries. In most cases, discomfort is mild to moderate and effectively managed with oral medication, enabling a faster and more comfortable recovery.

What does the pre-operative process for neurosurgery involve?

Before the procedure, a comprehensive medical assessment is carried out, including blood tests, imaging scans and a review of the clinical history. Medication is adjusted if necessary (for example, anticoagulants) and fasting instructions are provided. The patient is also informed about the procedure, its benefits, risks and the recovery process. This approach prepares the patient physically and mentally, reducing anxiety and minimising risks.

What is recovery like after neurosurgery?

Recovery is typically faster than with traditional techniques. Many patients are up and walking just a few hours after surgery, and discharge can take place the same day or within 24 hours. As the muscles and spinal joints are not significantly damaged, the return to daily activities is more straightforward. In some cases, physiotherapy is recommended to optimise recovery, but the majority of patients experience early improvement in both pain and function.

 Trustindex verifica que la fuente original de la reseña sea Google. El año pasado sufrí unos dolores totalmente incapacitantes en el hombro izquierdo que literalmente me paralizaron el brazo.  Fernando me hizo una ecografía para ver la causa, y después me trató con radiofrecuencia y masajes, aliviando muchísimo el dolor aunque me avisó que tendría que pasar por quirófano. Después, ya recuperada de la operación, viendo que todo estaba perfecto, me dijo que no importaba que volviera a hacerme nada más, salvo que me volviese a doler. Podría haberme recomendado ir cada semana solo para ganar dinero, pero no lo hizo.

La semana pasada volví con un problema en la mano y nuevamente salí contentísima, y sin dolor.

Aparte de fisioterapia he visto que ofrecen otros servicios como neurocirugía, psicología, etc. ¡También tienen un tratamiento revolucionario para eliminar -o minimizar al máximo- los dolores menstruales en una sesión!
